The 9th International Conference on Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development (CEESD 2025), jointly organized by the International Society for Environmental Information Sciences and the Asia Pacific Institute of Science and Engineering, and co-organized by Sophia University, was successfully held in Sanya, China from December 5–7, 2025. The event was supported by the Zhejiang University Hainan Research Institute and the Sanya Zongheng Energy Research Institute, with media support from the International Journal of Global Environmental Issues. The conference brought together experts, scholars, and researchers from China, Canada, Japan, Korea, Peru, Malaysia, Indonesia, and other regions.
The conference focused on the theme of “Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development,” aiming to promote academic exchange and encourage new ideas in environmental engineering, ecological restoration, and sustainability research.
Prof. Guohe Huang from the University of Regina served as the General Chair. Prof. Guangwei Huang from Sophia University and Prof. Yongping Li from Beijing Normal University served as Co-Chairs. The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Yongping Li. Prof. Guohe Huang delivered the opening remarks, welcomed all participants, and introduced the conference agenda.
Several internationally recognized experts delivered keynote speeches.
- Prof. Caterina Valeo from the University of Victoria (Canada) presented “Sustainable Stormwater Infrastructure for Mitigating the Urban Heat Island Effect,” offering new ideas on urban hydrology, green infrastructure, and stormwater management.
- Prof. Xiaohong Chen from Sun Yat-sen University (China) presented “Multiscale Effects and Drivers of Landscape Heterogeneity for Water-Related Ecosystem Services in Urban Agglomerations,” providing scientific insights for regional ecosystem management.
- Prof. Guangwei Huang from Sophia University (Japan) presented “Are We Safer than Before?” and led discussions on environmental security, risk assessment, and global sustainability trends.
The conference also featured multiple technical sessions and a poster session, encouraging active discussion and academic exchange. Technical Session I was chaired by Dr. Jing Liu from Xiamen University of Technology; Technical Session II by Dr. Pangpang Gao from the same institution; Technical Session III by Prof. Guangwei Huang from Sophia University; and the Poster Session by Prof. Yongping Li from Beijing Normal University.
To support emerging researchers, the conference presented Outstanding Oral Presentation Awards.
- Shengkui Dong (Sun Yat-sen University) received the award in Technical Session I.
- Jinjin Ma (Beijing Normal University) received the award in Technical Session II.
- Xilin Wang (University of Victoria, Canada) received the award in Technical Session III.
The success of CEESD 2025 was made possible by the joint efforts of committee members, keynote speakers, participants, and partner organizations. The conference provided a strong platform for global academic exchange and strengthened collaboration among research, education, and industry. The multidisciplinary insights and innovative findings shared at CEESD 2025 will continue to inspire future research and practice in environmental engineering and sustainable development.
