Dr. Guang-Qian Wang is professor and general director of the State Key Laboratory of Hydroscience and Engineering, Tsinghua University in China. He was the winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund Award in 1995 and his research has been supported by the Strategic Research Fund of National Natural Science Foundation. Currently he is also the chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China. He is also working as vice directors for the Landslide and Debris Flow Committee of the Chinese Society of Water and Soil Conservation, and the Sediment Committee of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society. Professor Wang has published more than 150 journal papers and 4 books in areas of water resources modeling.
Professor Wang has made many academic accomplishments in his professional career. He developed a kinetic model that has been successfully applied for explanation of complicated phenomenon with sediment concentration. This major achievement brought him the Ning Chien Memorial Prize in 1992. Another model for solid-liquid two-phase flows proposed by Professor Wang has also been well accepted and widely applied. His research paper about this work was recognized with the Excellent Paper Award by the World Association for Sedimentation and Erosion Research in 2007. Professor Wang was also accredited for his development of a granular flow model which has been successfully used as the criterion for judging significance of granular collision effect. Professor Wang’s research team was among the first working on digital watershed modeling by coupling multiple hydrologic, hydrodynamic and sedimentation dynamic processes. The model developed by his team initiated the integration of sedimentation and erosion processes into river basin modeling. Professor Wang’s contribution to his nation and international community of environmental conservation has been much represented by his works in many major water resources projects such as Three Gorge Dams, SanMenXia Reservoir, and Water Resources Regulation for the Yellow River Basin. Successful applications of his knowledge and methodologies have made him a distinguished scientist and consultant in the water resources field.
Professor Wang has been actively participating in activities organized by this society, and continuously encouraged his colleagues and students to do so. He has played a major role in the establishment of the ISEIS Commission of Water Resources Management. He offered many supports to our activities and publications, and these supports have become an indispensable part of ISEIS assets. He has a number of important research papers published in the Journal of Environmental Informatics. His assistance with the journal such as editing and reviews has helped the JEI become an important publication in the field of environmental science and engineering. This award to Professor Wang partly presents our appreciations to his contributions.
To Professor Guangqian Wang, as well as Tsinghua University and his colleagues and students, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations. I wish you greater success in your future endeavor.
