Each US Embassy or Consulate has a slightly different process for obtaining visas. Most of the individual websites are pretty up to date...please consult the Embassy or Consulate for your area.
The International Center of Western Kentucky University suggests that you apply for B1/B2 visas. Your conference attendance could give them the "Visitor for Business" (B-1) visa. If you plan to stay a few extra days to visit, travel or shop, those activities are more appropriate for "B-2 - Tourist" visitors. Either one should be okay given the short duration of the event.
